10 Seconds of Thanks

For my second blog post, I chose to complete the 10 Seconds of Thanks challenge.

In accordance with the assignment directions, I set a timer for ten seconds and using pen and paper, then wrote down everything for which I was thankful. (There was way more that I could have listed, but ten seconds went by very quickly.)

Afterward, I set the timer for another ten seconds and drew a picture of myself. (Yes, the assignments specified this as well.)  I took a photo of it to insert here.

Since very few people can read my handwriting, I have transcribed my list for everyone:

I am grateful for family, friends, life, learning, opportunity…

Ds106 Tutorial

The assignment asks to choose a character from a film, show, or book of our choosing, and write a script where that character raises awareness for a particular cancer. This is a tutorial on how to complete this assignment.

Step One: Choose a character. My chosen character was Bane from the most recent Batman series.

Step Two: For the remix assignment, pick a cancer cause. With his voice being the way it is, I thought it only right to go with throat cancer.

Step Three: Create a dialogue using your character, where your character explains why he/she is advocating for this particular cause, and engages the audience who he/she hopes to motivate to support this cause. Remember to include breaks as if the characters have to act it out. It is not like a book where breaths are assumed. Deep breaths need to be written in, longing looks need to be scripted; all motion that needs to happen in order to make this scene realistic, needs to be written in.

Keep in mind that I am not a master script writer, but here is an example provided below.

[Enter Bane]
Bane: Ladies and gentleman! This…
[audience jeers in excitement]
Bane: This voice … is not for show. In fact, I am going to share something with you all today. Today, I share with you the real story of how I got this mask.
[enter Talia]
[audience jeers in excitement again]
Talia: Bane…. [Talia pauses and touches the mask before turning back towards the audience] He was my saviour. I climed out of that dreadful hole and looked down while they beat on him until his face was almost unrecognizable.
Bane: Indeed. I no longer have a nose I can properly breath out of.
[both Bane and Talia pause]
Bane: But that is not why I wear this mask. That is not why I talk this way.
Talia: No, it’s not.
[Talia looks ashamed]
Talia: The doctor was able to wrap his face up and get him stable enough to live. I asked my father to come back for him but when he saw Bane’s face he could not stand the sight of him. For years I did not see my rescuer. My father told me he was dead, and likewise, told him that I was dead. But I was not.
Bane: It was not your fault darling.
[Talia looks lovingly at Bane and smiles]
Bane: I took to the only vice I thought I had left. For the next few years I smoked almost a pack a day. I thought, what else could happen to me?
Talia: Yes but then I came back. When the Batman killed my father I realized that his legacy, had not been fulfilled. I realized that the league of shadows needed a new leader and, naturally, I was next in line. And I took my place. That’s when Bane found me.
Bane: I did not like your father for what he did but I have always been a loyal person.
Talia: But by then it was too late.
Bane: I smoked so much that in just three years I developed throat cancer. On top of having half of the breathing power in my nose, I also had to get a hole cut in my throat and a device placed there that helps me breath and talk. You all value this voice but I loathe it.
[Talia to audience]: He used to have such a charming voice. He had an innocent face. And now….
[Talia looks at Bane guiltily]
Bane: And now I must wear this mask for the rest of my life or suffer a rather painful death.
Talia: People like the Batman and all his supporters may not understand why it is we do what we do but it is what is necessary. We weren’t all born with a silver spoon in our mouths.
Bane: No we weren’t, and that is why we are here today!
[Bane becomes increasingly more excitable]
Bane: To stop you from becoming like me!
Talia: We will give you all masks that will morph your voice into the perfect Bane voice but we need your help. This mask on his face is not cheap and we don’t want anyone else to have to suffer as he did. Help us raise enough money to raise awareness.
Bane: Masks will be fifty dollars each, and every penny earned, will go toward medical supplies for those who can’t afford it – and to anti tobacco ads to stop people from needing those supplies. Who’s ready to rid the world of cancer!
[Audience jeers]

[End of scene]

Historical Selfies

For this assignment, I chose to complete a tutorial for the Historical Selfies assignment from ds106.

First, I chose my historical figure. I chose Rosa Parks and the day in 1955 when she was asked to give up her seat on the bus.

To capture this moment, I downloaded the selfie photoshop template here.

It looks like this:

IMG_20140505_215200

First, I decided to use Paint as the program that I would complete the photoshop in.

To use Paint, you have to understand how it works.

First, I clicked File, Open, and chose the selfie template which I downloaded from the website.

Then I found an image of Rosa Parks on Google Images:

IMG_20140505_215137

Next, I copied and pasted the image of Rosa Parks from Google Images on top of the selfie template, like this:

IMG_20140505_214937

Then, I chose the Crop tool to resize the image of Rosa Parks to fit the selfie template.

Once I finished, I saved my work as a jpeg image and the final product looks like this:

i know this place like the back of my hand

no busy no people no smog or clock

right here is where i’ll stay

bugs and bees all sorts of things

on a large rock I find a place to lay

chirping lurking sounds all around

i fall asleep to the sounds all around

when i wake i find myself

wrapped up in the world of the natural

much like my ancestors might have

and again i walk the ground

i know this place like the back of my hand

ignore the people ignore the clock

Why do I go back to the abstract world again?

Historical Selfies

In this assignment, I chose “Historical Selfies” from the list of Visual Assignments.

First, I decided which program I could easily access to complete this assignment most efficiently, and

I chose Paint.

Once I chose to use Paint, I downloaded two pictures:

This blank selfie template was downloaded from the ds106 website:

Image

Next, I chose my historical event. I decided to find an image representative of Rosa Parks and her movement for civil rights in 1955, when she refused to give up her seat on the bus.

I searched her name on Google Images, and found this picture:

Image

Next, I created a new file in Paint and opened the image of the selfie template.

Then, I pasted the Google Image of Rosa Parks on top of the blank selfie template.

I used the crop button to re-size the dimensions of the Google Image to fit inside the selfie template.

After that, I erased the “likes” and “screename” and replaced it with this text:

“4,000,000,000 likes” and “rosaparks1955” and “#civilrights” and “#freedomofspeech”

Finally, I saved the picture as a jpeg:

Then, after it saved, I had my finished project!

What is in a Name.

What is in a Name.

Okay so I have always been told that there are not many people named Olivia, which is true until around 1999 when every other person was naming their child, no matter the sex(just kidding) Olivia. However my name is not inspired by Olivia Newton John, Grease the movie, but from my great-great- grandmother on my fathers side. I love this fact because my twin sister Eulaliah is the great great grandmother on my moms side and we both take after those families. Which probably explains why we are complete opposites. But if you look up my name on urban dictionary you can see that everyone says Olivia’s are “A beautiful wonderful hearted girl.
Wonderful to talk to . Always there for someone, great person. Absolutely FUN.” so I guess that means I’m a fun-great-listener. Which surprisingly I am. If you go to baby names.com though my name means Elf Army, which I find hilarious because it reminded me of Lord of the Rings. Since Liv Tyler is an elf, I guess another random connection is made! So in the end I have decided that my name means I’m caring, strong as an army, and very fun, but I’ll stick with the fact that I have a very distant relative, Olivia, who was know for being a beautiful southern socialite and a great mother.

Picturing Prufrock Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to do the Picturing Prufrock project. It is fairly easy and you do not have to paint a picture as I have. But I am going to document my steps of painting my visual.

Step one gather supplies (dog support optional) : If you are looking for cheap watercolors there are usually really decently priced starter kits at Michaels.

Image

Step two pick your line: I recommend reading the poem a few times until you find yourself stopping at a line that strikes you in a way. I was a fan of this poem before so I knew what lines I enjoyed this made it easier. Out of my favorites I ended up picking the one I thought would be easiest to create a visual.

Image

Step three sketch your visual: You should first brainstorm a little and consider the correlation between images and words. Think about what is going to adequately show the lines and sometimes the theme of the poem. I went with the tea pot and tea cup for obvious reasons. I chose frivolous decorations and bright colors to further assist the theme of trivialness that permeates the poem. I added the pocket watch as homage to the theme of time and turning back time in the poem.

Image

Step four color it in: Once you have made a tentative drawing it is time to begin painting and adding color. Then you have a finished project that will hopefully complete the project but also make you super proud!

Image

Picturing Prufrock

In this project we were asked to pick our favorite line from The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S Elliot. Using this line we were to make a visual in any medium we wished that represented this line. I chose to paint with water colors my favorite line, “After the cups, the marmalade, the tea, among the porcelain, some talk of you and me.”Imaget

Write yourself into history

The link to the assignment is here.

The assignment says to pick a historically significant event and write a journal entry as if I traveled back in time and took place in it.

Dear Journal;

Today is a remarkable day. These past few months I haven’t really been paying much attention to anything else but trying to piece my life together but today, it seems like everyone is on edge. Lately I’ve been seeing political warfare amongst everyone. If you’re not democratic then you can’t go certain places, tension is rising! People that haven’t voted in decades are out voting today and, even though my mother hates to stand in lines, she even stood in line to vote today.
I can’t wait for this to be over. I’ve been having arguments with my friends as if it really mattered but, we seemed to disagree on voting privileges. They aren’t voting because they have been following the politics, hell they barely even understand politics. They were voting for someone because Oprah said to do so! And apparently, anyone that Oprah endorses is gold! Eh, no matter.
I didn’t plan on watching the final results tally but I knew if I didn’t I’d see it all over myspace tomorrow; plus it was on almost every channel. And I may not have been following all the politics, and I may not care much about them, but even I couldn’t help but shed a tear as America voted in the first African American president. Today, was a remarkable day. And someday when I get old, I’ll be able to tell my grandchildren, that I remember that 🙂

Until tomorrow, goodnight 🙂
